Polio...the virus, the vaccine and the vicissitudes.
From 1940 to 1960 a spike in cases of polio left many paralyzed and in iron lungs.  Older members remember summers of fear of the infection. Rotary has committed to eradicating the infection...has spent 2.1 billion dollars.  It costs $3 to vaccinate a child, and polio is 99% eliminated with pockets of infection in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Vaccine skepticism is a threat to world health.  Many members contributed to a Polio Fund at the meeting....
