Today’s Speaker
Arnie Croce was introduced by Peter Webb.
Arne relayed to us information about his latest venture, FishWise, where he is the CFO.  FishWise is an organization focused on sustainable seafood practices globally.  There are 30 people, most of which are marine biologists, scientists, etc.  The company was originally founded in 2003 by a couple of UCSC alumni.  The annual budget is $4MM, of which about 50% comes from donors.

The sustainable seafood movement began in the 1990’s.  FishWise is trying to build a sustainable global supply of seafood without damaging our ecosystems.  Seafood is the most heavily traded commodity globally, and there is a great deal of complexity in the seafood supply chain.  In terms of consumer choices, there is “wild caught” versus aquaculture, commercial and industrial fishing.  Generally the ships come in, and then the catch is globally distributed very quickly.
Apparently 1/5th of all fish caught are considered “IUU” (illegal, unreported). This involves human rights and trafficking issues as another component issue.  Traceability of the supply chain is another big issue—how do you know seafood actually IS sustainably caught?

Be a responsible consumer: 1) ask for sustainable seafood, (2) make responsible purchases, (3) use the Seafood Watch app.

Aquaculture has been a big part of sustainability, though some practices are better than others.  Interesting point—“smaller is better” in terms of sustainability, i.e. eat more anchovies, sardines, clams, mussels, oysters for seafood choices, better for the environment.

Thank you for a very interesting discussion.
