Robert Mullin, our speaker on August 25th, provided a fascinating look at the implications of moving to renewable energy. Several highlights from his presentation:
- Markets care about economics & geography, not about politics or
social issues
- In the great war between politics & physics, physics wins
- The idea we can completely abandon fossil fuels in the next 20 years
simply defies physics
- America is the Saudi Arabia of natural gas
- Malthusian predictions of cataclysm are offset by human ingenuity
- Nuclear energy & natural gas are needed to bridge the transition from
fossil fuels to renewable energy

SAN MATEO ROTARY LEGACY GIVING PROGRAM - HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT IT?

At our August 18th meeting, President Dick provided Walt McCullough with accolades for all his work in locating great speakers for our weekly programs. Walt heard Robert Mullin, our August 25th speaker, give a presentation a while back and realized Mullin would be an informative and engaging speaker for our Club. Walt was right! In honor of all Walt does in scouting for lunch speakers, President Dick presented him with a bottle of wine to enjoy. Many thanks to Walt! We look forward to his continuing efforts to locate engaging speakers!
After a long absence due to COVID and various health challenges, Ro Bianchi returned in person for the August 25th lunch meeting. Everyone was delighted to see him & President Dick invited Ro to the podium to share a few words. Ro shared two questions from his recent encounters with the medical profession - Why do they wake you up when you're in the hospital to give you a sleeping pill? When you have to take a variety of pills, how does each pill know where to go once it's in your body? Great questions! In honor of Ro's return, President Dick presented him with a nice bottle of wine with a label proclaiming Ro as our Story Teller Extraordinaire. Well-deserved!
