Angel Riley delivered the news, including compliments that are thinly veiled insults, such as, “You look so gorgeous I didn’t recognize you.”

Oscar Lopez-Guerra was welcomed back to the club following the replacement of his left shoulder.  He claims he is now the Bionic Man—at least in part.

Jerry Kunz, a longtime member, appeared as well, and all were happy to see him again. 

Alan Talansky announced that $42,000 was raised by the Fun Run, all of which will go toward scholarships.   Great job, Juan Raigoza, Alan and committee!  Alan announced that Daniel Skandera,a nine-year-old, broke the world record for his age group and will be invited to the club and given a prize.  All sponsors’ names were entered into a drawing for a very nice bottle of wine.

Dick Bennett asked anyone interested in attending the Stanford-USC tailgate to let him know ASAP. Otherwise, the event will be canceled.   

Chuck Osborn led us in singing Happy Birthday to our October Rotarians and Tom Huening circulated a card for John Kelly, turning 89. 

 

 

The City of San Mateo has hosted a Youth in Government Day for 75 years and this year was no exception.  Sheila Canzian chaired the event with the help of her team and multiple department heads, which culminated in having the participating students at our meeting.

 

Rather than tackling one or two key city issues this year, Sheila opted to have the students come up with questions for a debate, since it is a city council election year with three seats in question.  Four of the seven candidates were able to make it. (Club member Eric Rodriguez sent his regrets, as he had a meeting he couldn’t cancel.) 

 

Participating were Rick Bonilla (incumbent ), Chelsea Bonini, Charlie Drechsler and Robert Newsom, Jr.  Also running are Joe Goethals and Mark DePaula.

 

Taking turns, the panelists were asked questions about law enforcement, housing, working with our schools, addressing language barriers and more.  Kudos were given to Chief Susan Manheimer for her department’s efforts to prevent kids from taking a bad turn by intervening early, with police officers volunteering to work with our Police Athletic League.
