Sasha is the author of "Your Presence is Mandatory" about her WWII grandfather as a Soviet army veteran and events in Ukraine.  She was born in Crimea and immigrated to San Francisco at the age of 13. She has  degrees from UC Berkeley and NYU, has lived in several cities around the world,  and writes for a number of newspapers including the New York Times. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and children aged 6 and 3. 

The State writes the history books. But the truth is sometimes found in personal histories such as this book.  US veterans and POWS are heroes, but  in the Soviet Union POWS were suspected as collaborators of  Germany and were forever second-class citizens.  Secrets taint the whole family. 

The author reports seeing signs in Ukraine lauding the WWII Soviet army....."We made it to Berlin...
