Prior to the beginning of the meeting, District Governor, Ron Gin went around and introduced himself to many of the members and in particular acknowledged Al Norcross for his 55 years of Rotary membership. Ron's sweetie, Liz Mark, also attended the meeting.

Susan has family in Houston and a family member on one of the Naval ships that had an accident recently. We can be in harms way and we can still be the change we want to see in the world. How do we make the biggest change? Neighborhood Watch, make a donation, roll up your sleeves and volunteer. Say the things you most want to say to your loved ones. Let’s all go out and be that change.

A person in a vehicle was tailgating, honking and yelling obscenities at the car in front of her. A passing police officer took her in where she was fingerprinted and and put into a holding cell. Some time later, she was released with a big apology. What with the “WWJD” and “Follow Me to Christian School” bumper stickers, the officer assumed that she had stolen the car.

Ron gifted Chris Eckert with a gearshift “trophy” in honor of the carshow, which Ron attended. He also passed out Rotary pins in salute to Star Trek—taking Rotary where it has never gone before.

 

 

He showed a very moving history of Rotary from it’s founding  to the work that Rotary members carry out.

 

Everyday we see opportunity. Rotary rises to the challenge, from a converted bus that serves as a food distribution truck to fighting desease to providing medical equipment to those in need to Ending Polio.

The first priority for Rotary is ending polio. In the 40s and 50s there were 1,000 cases a day world wide. Now we are “this close” to ending polio. Since 1985, $1.6 B have been donated and $2.5 B children have received the vaccination.

 

Because of the infrastructure that was put in place by Rotary, Eboli was quickly stopped from spreading.

 

The Gates Foundation has pledged $100M over the next three years, to match the $50M being raised by Rotary.

 

 

He went on to describe the work in district 5150; including Shelter Box, Rotoplast and Roots for Peace.

 

He also acknowledged the specific work of our club, including the clubs we have sponsored; Burlingame, Foster City, Half Moon Bay and San Mateo Sunrise.

 

And he noted that we have a higher percentage of women in our club then the national average.  Anne LeClair being the first to join!
