San Mateo Rotarians slogged through the rain & battled powerful winds on March 9th to enjoy lunch together while an atmospheric river loomed on the horizon.  The weather didn't dampen anyone's spirits, as the Club honored our newest Paul Harris Society Members and Paul Harris Fellows.  

 

This year's Paul Harris Fellows, who have given at least $1,000 to the Annual Fund, Polio Plus, or RI Foundation Grants include Dick Bennett, Nicole Cherok, Dick DeLuna, Clarke Funkhouser, Martin Harband, Ross Moilan, and Juan Raigoza.  They each received a new Paul Harris pin to add to their Rotary Pin collection!

 

President Dick gave a shout-out to Jonathan King who secured Jonathan Gunderson to speak at the last minute when our previously scheduled speaker bowed out with 48 hours notice!  Gunderson shared his experiences as an Ultra Runner, including competing and finishing the Bad Water Ultra Marathon - a race that begins in Bad Water Basin in Death Valley and finishes half-way up Mt. Whitney at Lone Pine.  Want to give it a try?  It's only 135 miles long and is always run in early July, when the temperature has been known to reach 130 degrees!   Finishers get a special belt buckle.  Jonathan was very pleased to share his with us!  

 

Our over-flow table obviously enjoyed Nicole Cherok's Newscast as she kept everyone laughing with a rib-tickling set of riddles.  Highlights included:

Club Members also signed a birthday card for Lee Osborne who is celebrating his 96th birthday!  Peter Webb reminded the Club of the vital role Lee played in the development of Rotary Haciendas & Floritas, the affordable senior living buildings in San Mateo built & supported by The Rotary Club of San Mateo.
