Smiles All around!!!

President John inducted three more Rotarians into his President's Club on February 20th.  When President John asked Rich Orr if he would join, Rich politely replied he was already a member. President John then gave Rich the chance to pass the opportunity along to another Rotarian.  Given his profession, Rich indicated he needs to keep all his friends, so he graciously agreed to take a 2nd bite of the President's Club apple. President John was delighted!

Next victim...err, potential member...was Bob O'Connor who President John acknowledged as a dear friend & esteemed mentor.  As President John extended the invitation to become a member of his President's Club, he asked how Bob was doing. Bob exuberantly exclaimed, "I'm glad to still be alive!" and promptly joined the President's Club.

Father Oliver was the meeting's speaker and gave a moving & humorous account of growing up in Nigeria and his pastoral experiences in California.  President John presented Father Oliver with a highly valued souvenir speaker's coin & then got ready to adjourn the meeting.

All of a sudden Mike Berube leaped out of his seat, kneeled down, and pleaded with President John to let him join the President's Club in honor of Father Oliver.  Once President John recovered from the shock of Mike on bended knee, he enthusiastically accepted the offer, thanking Mike for the kind gesture and noting that long ago the two of them were classmates at Serra!

Interested in joining The Effect in a journey to Guatemala to learn more about the impact of our club's global grant in providing microcredit funds for women in Guatemala? Trip will be June 2-9 with an information session immediately after the February 27th Rotary meeting where you can learn more. The trip will also include visits to Antigua, Lake Ititlan & the Mayan ruins of Iximche.
Should be a great trip!
A warm welcome to Lisa Taner! President John presented Lisa with her red badge at the February 20th meeting. Lisa recently retired after serving as Bill Kenney's Administrative Assistant. When asked what she likes best about retirement so far, Lisa happily replied, "Sleeping in!" Lisa looks forward to working side-by-side with San Mateo Rotarians on community service. She is also a member of the PAL Board and several neighbor-
hood association boards.
Rotarians at the February 20th meeting were saddened to learn June Lamb recently passed away. June was a long-time San Mateo Rotarian, having joined the Club in 2001.  She
faithfully attended weekly meetings and was a lively lunch conversa-
tionalist. June continued her practice as a Marriage & Family Therapist well into her nineties and had recently been living out of the area to be nearer to family.
a deluge of dictionaries!
Here's to the Dynamic Duo of Mike Peterson & President-Elect Joan Rosas who have again done a stellar job of ordering this year's dictionaries! Mike happily displays one that will soon be in the hands of a smiling 3rd grader somewhere in San Mateo.  He is surrounded by boxes containing 450 dictionaries recently delivered to Joan's garage. Over the next 2 weeks San Mateo Rotarians will be distributing the dictionaries to students throughout San Mateo.  If you'd like to join in the fun, let President Elect Joan know & she'll find a volunteer slot for you.
This Week's Speaker
This week we welcome Rushton Hurley to the podium.  Hurley is the Director of Serra High School's Design-Led Innovation Program which introduces students to the principles of design thinking and how to apply them to solving real world problems.  He is in demand for teacher professional development and has written several books.  In 2015 Hurley helped start the Rotary eClub of Silicon Valley and served as its Charter President.  He also likes cats & is an accomplished juggler!
