FINE WORK by President Chris
Rod Linhares was fined for a pic taken at a disco party two years ago. When Prez Chris chastised Rod for not inviting him to the party, Rod said the party givers “should be trumpeted” for not having invited him. Needless to say, “Live Dangerously Rod” joined the President’s club.
Prez Chris ATTEMPTED to fine Joy Rudkin, until she reminded him that C&R will be donating THREE MORE $250 gift certificates for the raffle.  El Presidente then turned his attention to Lynn Armenio’s feet---or a photo of what he SAID were Lynn’s pedicured feet. She denied it, but paid $15 per toe. (You had to be there…)  All agreed there had to be foul play AFOOT.

Speaker
Secretary of State George Shultz

Walt gave the world’s shortest introduction for former Treasury Secretary and Secretary of State George Shultz.  WHAT a mind—what an intellect. If you missed this, you missed a great one!  (A pdf is attached of a Hoover Institution doc on Global Workforce Change, referred to by Secretary Shultz. )

Among the points he so eloquently made:
  • The world ten years from now will be a very different place and there are four major drivers of that change:
  1. Changing Demography—now fewer younger people and far more older people.  Most countries are losing people, with the exception of the US, Canada and Australia. If we discourage immigrants, we won’t have the same vitality we’ve had.  He shared a quote from the show Hamilton: “The immigrant got the job done”.   African and Asian countries have high fertility rates, but not good economic prospects and the drought/changing climate are driving migration.
  2. The Information and Communication Revolution is everywhere and we need to sift through it.  This makes the process of governance much more difficult everywhere.  He said “The Russians are laughing”, knowing they’ve tied our government in knots for a year and a half with the investigation.
  3. The World is very diverse, even within countries, making governance more difficult.  He said the U.S. is accustomed to diversity, but the Chinese are trying to deal with it by oppression.   He praised his wife Charlotte, who is Chief of Protocol for San Francisco and California, noting that every one of the 70 US-aligned countries is celebrated on its national day with a reception, its flag, etc., in the city.  (Side note: He shared a story about going to the newly refurbished Statue of Liberty with President Reagan on the Fourth of July. He said Reagan made a point of saying, “You can go to China and never become a Chinese citizen, you can go to Germany and never become a German citizen, but anyone can come to America and become an American.”
  4. Artificial Intelligence and 3D Printing/Manufacturing—The  combination of these two will   allow people to produce nearly anything near their homes.  This will be a huge problem in the countries that provide low cost labor, such as Bangladesh, causing a lot of displacement.    On the security side, the changes mean expensive lethal weapons can be created, from drones to 3D printer- manufactured nuclear weapons.
Secretary Shultz said two factors are “of devastating importance”: One, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and two, climate change.  The world is getting warmer. He noted an upcoming book Beyond Disruption and praised brilliant author Lucy Shapiro, who says global warming will result in the flourishing of tropical diseases, with the Zika virus being just the tip of the iceberg.  She says we need to try to understand the situation better and to take advantage of the opportunities to protect ourselves from the ravages of disease.
He shared numerous personal experiences, noting that some of the success we had with the Russians under Reagan were due to the fact that Reagan didn’t feel a need to brag about successes achieved for the press coverage. He said the Russians knew things wouldn’t be made public, and were more willing to cooperate with us as a result.
During Q&A, he noted that the US , Canada and Mexico were once “The Three Amigos” of North  America, noting that the Reagan team worked hard to get Mexico to identify with North America, rather than Latin America.  He said this relationship has now been destroyed.
What a talk! It could fill volumes!
