SPINNINGS - WEEK OF 2/23/23

If it's February, it's Dictionary Month!

Joan's Subaru station wagon was the ideal vehicle for transporting dictionaries from school-to-school. Sue is ready to assist!
Steve, Mike, and Barb have the dictionaries all set for the arrival of Sunnybrae's 3rd graders. Smiles are the order of the day!
Students were abuzz with excitement as they browsed through their dictionaries, happily sharing new discoveries with their friends.
Thanks to the intrepid leadership of President-Elect Nominee Joan Rosas, San Mateo Rotarians distributed 512 dictionaries to 3rd graders in 10 San Mateo/Foster City elementary schools. The MacMillan Dictionary for Children contains user-friendly definitions and a myriad of wonderful illustrations that are sure to captivate browsing students.

One student asked if she would need to give the dictionary back at the end of the school year.  When she learned it was hers to keep, a huge smile spread across her face as she exclaimed, "Thank you. I've never had a book that's just mine before."  A LEAD Academy teacher shared how much the students love the dictionaries - during free reading when they can read anything they choose, many of them pick the dictionary!

A hearty thank you to the Rotarians who helped with distribution:

Lynn Armenio, Rosemary Azem, Anne Campbell, Vic Carboni, Barbara Evers, Claudia Ferguson, Juliana Fuerbringer, Arlene Kace, Rod Linhares, Lisa Diaz Nash, Steve Parker, Mike Peterson, Joan Rosas and Sue Winks.

Mike Peterson wins the title for most schools visited this year.  Thank you, Mike, for all of your support every year with dictionary distribution!

A huge shout-out to Joan Rosas who chaired the Dictionary Committee. Joan housed boxes & boxes of dictionaries in her garage, transported them to the schools, and organized all the logistics of school calendars and volunteer assignments.  Nothing fazed her as she remained the epitome of grace and good humor throughout!

512 3rd graders are now the happy owners of their very own dictionaries.

Thanks Rotary Club of San Mateo!
