At the August 1st Rotary Meeting, Angel Saunders provided an update on the work of the Climate Change Committee (C3).
She reported the Rotary Club of San Mateo Rotary Coral Reef Wheel was installed in the Caribbean near Panama in December 2022. Our club will be receiving periodic videos of our reef as it regenerates. Stay tuned for updates!
As part of our Reef Wheel donation, we will receive weekly suggestions for how to reduce our use of plastic from "Plastic Free Through the Year." (C)3 will be sharing weekly tips to help you dramatically reduce and even eradicate your use of plastic.
Did you know? 1 million plastic bottles are bought & disposed of every minute. If you do the math, that totals a staggering 480 billion bottles every year! Less than half go to recycling plants and only 7% are actually recycled. The rest end up in landfill and the oceans. Plastic bottles also contain toxic chemicals that leach into the liquid, especially when exposed to light or heat.
At the August 8th meeting, Laura Porter shared the first weekly plastic reduction suggestion:
Switch to solid soap, shampoo, and conditioner bars. They are
economical because they do not contain water and can last 2 to
3 times longer than liquid products in plastic bottles.
