Rosemary Azem introduced a four-minute Arch Klumph video explaining Rotary International Foundation and encouraged purchase of district raffle tickets, which support it.

 

Prez Chris presented our banner to Visiting Rotarian Thomas Malnusakis of Lithuania. Thomas was in the area on business and dropped in, which is what Rotary is all about. Turns out, based on his description of Lithuanian Rotary activities, we're about all the same things.

The Oct. 22 Fun Run is fast approaching, both in schedule and in fundraising deadlines. The committee hopes to exceed its 2016 total and invites sponsorships, signups and, especially, volunteers to help out the day of.

 

Jodi De Smidt issued the call for attendance to last Thursday’s night’s event.

 

 

 

 

Paul and Dick announced that Anne Campbell has converted her pledge of $2,000 to a straighti-out donation to the big wine party this Sunday, Oct. 1 at Paul’s Cuvée Wine Cellars, 2 to 5:30 p.m. All proceeds from the $50/person event benefit the club’s Community Fund activities, such as support for community non-profits such as CORA, CASA, San Mateo PAL and many others. With Anne’s generous gift, the event has already raised $4,000, with another $4,000 to go.

There’ll be wine, of course, appetizers, a free commemorative wine glass, a wine auction, wine raffle and a door prize.

There’ll even be a grape crush in which some attendees may participate.

It’s for all Rotarians of all Peninsula clubs and their guests. Foster City Rotary will be cooking.

Attendees will be tasting of Cuvée vintages.

The committee is also soliciting donations of bottles of wine to make the auction and raffle very, very big. So sign up, give up a bottle and come out for some fun.

Liz Mayta and Jake Nguyen were the subjects of Dupe the Dummies and, truth to tell, they did. Liz had never been robbed by a San Francisco police cadet and Jake did not swim across Cam Ranh Bay. Pretty interesting lies, though.

 

 

There was something about a cowboy, Jeff in a Stetson. “That all you got?” Jeff asked. PrezEckert had…nothing. Like a rowdy riding the flanks, Jeff brought it all home with a President’s Club donation.

 

 

Michelle Carter, formerly managing editor of the San Mateo County Times and a USIA Scholar in Residence assigned to Russian newspaper media, is the author of two books about her experiences in Russia, “Children of Chernobyl” and “From Under the Russian Snow.”

The first depicts the era before the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the second is a memoire about her experiences in the Putin era.

Salient feature about the Soviets: The system worked as long as Moscow wielded total control over the society and economy. When it collapsed, confusion and fear followed. There’s nothing Russians hate more than uncertainty. The U.S. made and effort to bring the country along with more western economic development beginning in 1991, but we introduced economic principles “without the rule of law.”

She thought she’d be participating in perestroika and glasnost to help create a corps of news media that “would speak truth to power,” but “it vanished under Putin,” a “bubble of freedom, and it burst.”

Sales of the book were brisk.
