A scholarship AUCTION

for the ages!

Talk about a Grand Finale! With thanks to Chris Eckert for donating a 3-night stay at his Paso Robles Victorian Air B&B to the Scholarship Club. Chris gave another star-performance as Auctioneer & managed to engage Talbott Smith and Nick Rogers in an ever-escalating & highly entertaining bidding war.

Eventually, Talbott was victorious with a winning bid of $1,250, sweetened by a promise of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, courtesy of Chris's Mom who lives in a cottage at the back of the property.  Not to be outdone, an anonymous Rotarian suggested Chris might be amenable to honoring Nick's last bid of $1150 by making another 3 nights available for the scholarship cause.  Chris quickly agreed & Nick was on the spot!  Not sure if cookies sealed the deal, but Nick will also be visiting Paso! Thanks to Chris, Talbott & Nick for being such great sports & for so generously sweetening the Scholarship Club Pot!

Thanks to all Rotarians who have donated to this year's Scholarship Club. With the auction results (thanks also to Dave Bennett for the Dodgers/Giants tix with parking!), Jeff announced we've raised $40,000 which exceeds our goal of $37,000!

It's not too late to donate. Click on the link below!

Ever seen a brood of baby owls?

Ashley Kinney of the Peninsula Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center provided Rotarians with a fascinating look at what's involved in rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wild animals and birds.

The Center which opened recently in Saratoga has the capacity to assist 10,000 animals & birds.  Care ranges from feeding baby birds every 45 minutes to minimizing human contact with raccoons, bobcats & coyotes so they can be released somewhere between 1 and 5 miles of where they were rescued.

thanks for YOUR support OF the effect!

Don Leydig conveyed "THANKS!" from The Effect for San Mateo Rotarians' generous support of their fundraising efforts. The Effect students raised $800 from their recent visit to a Rotary meeting and $5,000 from their annual Taco Dinner which was well-attended by Rotarians. They now have raised just about all the funding needed for this year's students to visit Guatemala in early June. Thanks to one & all for your support!

dr. scott to the rescue!

As we continue to adjust to our new digs at the Coyote Yacht Club, every once in a while tech glitches arise. Thanks to Dr. Scott for leaping to the rescue to help ensure Ashley Kinney's slides were displayed in all their glory! President Joan was very pleased!
