Einstein took a cab to a conference. Not really wanting to participate in such bland scientific discourse he and his cab driver switched places. When the cab driver, posing as Einstein was asked a question the driver could not answer, he replied "Why that question has such an easy answer, I'll let my driver reply."

 

Bob Binn's wife was in the hospital but is home now. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Spoke about the proposed tolls for the 101 corridor to supply funding to create a toll lane to mitigate travel congestion.

This lane would not be additional lane, but would convert the auxiliary lanes (exit only lanes) to regular lanes and convert the farthest left lane as a toll lane.

He is opposed and argued that 1) when other cities have done this, they haven't experienced faster moving traffic and have experienced difficulties in cars exiting from the far left lane to the off ramp on the far right 2) he augured that it imposes an undo burden on commuters with a low income to be able to move along the corridor and 3) augured that the road has already been paid for...drivers shouldn't have to pay again. 

 

He expressed that particularly with the wealth in Silicon Valley (77 billionaires) that such a burden on those working 2 - 3 jobs just isn't right.

 

He proposed instead that the lane be turned into a commuter lane to ease congestion.

 

He also expressed frustration with the lack of transparency on the decision, which is solely at the discretion of CalTrans.

 

He noted that Joe Simitian (Santa Clara County Council) , Lenny Siegel (Mountain View Mayor) and someone important in Foster City do not support the toll lanes. And more on getting on board.

 

There was a fair amount of discussion about the issue, including Sue Lempert's opinion that toll roads have been shown to work--particularly in the east coast.

 

Supervisor Canepa encouraged us all to study the matter and make sure we're aware of what is being proposed vs. what the rhetoric is telecasting is being proposed.
